Our 2027 Curriculum Guides step you through the subject selection process at Blackwood High School. It explains how we support students in Years 7 through 12 to make informed choices about their learning. It shows the range of subjects available across different learning areas. It outlines important dates, processes, and what you need to know about SACE requirements.
Subject Selection Process: How our Care Group teachers, Year Level Leaders, and specialist staff work together to help your young person choose subjects that align with their goals. We run a Subject Selection Day each year in Term 3, Week 4, where families can meet with subject specialists, ask questions, and make confident decisions together.
Subject Offerings: The full range of subjects available across English, Humanities, Mathematics, Science, Languages, Arts, Technology, Health and Physical Education, and VET pathways. You'll see what's available at each year level and how subjects connect to create coherent pathways.
SACE Information: What students need to complete their South Australian Certificate of Education, including compulsory subjects, credit requirements, and how different subjects contribute to their overall qualification.
Post-School Pathways: How subject choices connect to university entry, TAFE enrolment, and employment opportunities. This section helps families understand which subjects open which doors.
VET and Flexible Learning: Our vocational education and training options, including school-based apprenticeships and how we tailor programs to suit individual students. Last year we had the second-highest VET enrolment in the state, which tells you something about our commitment to different pathways.
How We Support Your Family Through This Process
Choosing subjects can feel overwhelming, especially in Year 10 when decisions start to matter for SACE. Our Care Group teachers distribute information throughout the year, and our specialist team (SACE Leader, Student Wellbeing Leaders, Personalised Learning Leader, and VET/Pathways Leader) are all available to discuss specific courses and career pathways.
Parents and caregivers play a vital role in subject selection. We expect you to be active contributors to this process. That means attending Subject Selection Day with your young person, asking questions of our staff, and helping them think through their choices carefully.
The Reality of Subject Confirmation
Here's something important to understand: selecting subjects doesn't guarantee enrolment in every choice. We try our best to accommodate students' top preferences, and this depends on our ability to provide the necessary teachers and create viable classes.
Sometimes subjects run at the same time. Sometimes we can't form a class because too few students selected it.
This is why we ask students to consider their reserve subject choices carefully. Those alternatives might need to be used, and we want to make sure they're meaningful options, not just random selections.
Once a student finalises their choices in our Web Preferences system, those selections are locked in. We use them to build the entire school timetable and determine our staffing requirements. Changes to subject choices after this point create significant complications for the whole school community.
For Families New to Blackwood High
If your young person is currently in Year 6, you'll receive subject selection and enrolment information via email in late August. The subject selection form comes as part of the Enrolment Package, with clear instructions about timelines and how to submit choices.
