Our uniform policy was developed by the school community and endorsed by our Governing Council, parents, caregivers, staff and students. Everyone had a say in what works and what doesn't.
Why We Have a Uniform
Wearing school uniform:
- Helps us identify students on school grounds, during excursions, and in the wider community
- Provides appropriate, cost-effective clothing for the wide range of activities students do here
- Develops a positive image of Blackwood High in the community
- Contributes to school identity and creates a sense of belonging
- Reduces competitive dressing
- Builds discipline in wearing prescribed clothing, which most employers require
Ordering Uniform Items
All uniform items are available through UMS, our official supplier. You can order online or visit their shop at Unit 2, 985-987 South Road, Melrose Park. They're open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 12pm Saturday.
There's also a uniform shop on the Blackwood Primary School grounds with these opening hours:
- Monday: 8:15am to 9:15am
- Wednesday: 12:45pm to 1:30pm
- Friday: 8:15am to 9:15am and 3:00pm to 3:15pm
- Summer dress in custom-designed eucalypt green stripe, worn no shorter than the middle of the knee
- Bottle green hooded windcheater or half-zip jumper options, both with school logo
- White long-sleeve shirt with school logo (no other white shirt is acceptable)
- Polo shirt in bottle green with school logo, available in long or short sleeve
- Plain black school mid-thigh length shorts
- Plain black school pants, hemmed shoe length
- Plain white or black socks
- Plain black flat-heeled sturdy shoes with fully closed top of shoe and closed back, OR completely black sneakers with black laces (canvas shoes and slip-ons that expose the top of the foot don't provide adequate protection)
- Cap or bucket hat with school logo on front
- School skirt in plain black, custom designed with two inverted pleats front and back, worn no shorter than the middle of the knee
- Hooded windcheater (pouch pocket) with logo, windcheater zip collar, puffer jacket or vest, all with logo, in black
- Sports jacket in black with school logo (can be worn as everyday uniform item)
- Long or short-sleeve polo shirt in bottle green with school logo (no other layers of shirts should be visible beneath these)
- T-shirt in plain white (no logo or coloured bands), short-sleeved, only to be worn under polo shirt or windcheater
- Plain black school pants, hemmed shoe length
- Plain black tights (no patterned or footless tights)
- Plain white or black socks
- Cap or bucket hat with school logo on front
- Plain black flat-heeled sturdy shoes with fully closed top of shoe and closed back, OR completely black sneakers with black laces
Physical Education
All students must bring and wear a change of suitable clothing for PE lessons. The Blackwood High School Sports/PE polo shirt is compulsory during PE.
Students in our specialist netball program need the netball uniform and a tracksuit. Students in our specialist football program must wear the football top, shorts and socks when representing the school.
Sports Uniform
Our custom-designed sport shorts and sport polos are available in both short and long sleeves. The sports uniform is compulsory for all students representing the school in sporting competitions.
Families may choose to purchase the two-piece tracksuit, which can be worn for PE lessons or over sports uniforms when travelling to compete for the school. The jacket component of the tracksuit may be worn as part of the everyday school uniform.
What's Not Acceptable
The following items are not part of school uniform:
- Yoga pants, sports pants, patterned or footless tights
- Multi-coloured headbands and scarves
- Undergarments that are readily visible under the school uniform
- Rolled-up trousers or shorts
- Excessive jewellery and badges (one badge, one necklace, one ring, small discreet earrings are sufficient. No jewellery, belts or rings with studs)
- Hats and caps with offensive logos or colours other than school logo colours (hats and caps must not be worn inside school buildings)
Students not in full uniform may not be permitted to go on school excursions, participate in official functions, present or receive awards at assemblies and graduations, or work as Student Wellbeing Centre helpers.
When Your Young Person Can't Wear Full Uniform
If your young person cannot wear full school uniform, you must provide a note in their diary explaining why. If no note is provided to explain a genuine reason, consequences may include:
- Lunchtime detention
- After-school detention
- A meeting with the family and a member of the Senior Leadership Team to discuss the issue
Wearing school uniform correctly is an important commitment to being part of the Blackwood High School community.
